Is It OK To Drive On Empty

Everyone can sympathize with the following scenario: It was a long, long day at work. You are finally finished, and you find yourself stuck in miles or traffic, when all you want to do is be home. And wouldn’t you know it, your gas light activates, indicating that you are low on fuel and need to fill up. The last thing you want to do is stop and add 15 minutes to your commute, so you drive home and decide to worry about it in the morning. But is it really OK to drive on empty? For a few reasons, it probably is not. Here’s why:

You Could Run Out Of Gas

This one is rather obvious. If you drive for too long with the gas light activated, eventually you will run out of gas. That is an embarrassing and costly situation to find yourself in. You either need a tow truck or your walking shoes to get to the next service station, and neither option is all that attractive. Avoid this by simply filling up when you hit a quarter of a tank.

Your Car Was Designed To Have Fuel

Your car’s fuel filter was designed to be submerged in fuel, so when you drive on empty, it often is not. This can lead to misfires and malfunctions, and any auto technician will tell you this is not a cheap component to repair or replace. Instead of risking it, simply make sure your car has gas.
