Get Your College Aged Child Road Ready

If you have a college-aged child, sending them off to school can already be stressful enough without having to worry about automotive care. If your child is driving a vehicle to and from school or on campus, there are several things you can do to ensure that they’re properly prepared. With a few simple tips, you can get peace of mind, and your college student will be safe on the road. Read on to learn more about how you can prep your child for car care during college life.

Get an Inspection

College is busy enough, so have their car thoroughly inspected before they head to campus. With a thorough inspection, you can find out whether or not the vehicle needs certain repairs in order to be road-ready. An inspection should include a brake check, oil and filter change, and a battery check at minimum. Schedule the inspection before you load the car up with stuff so it’s easier for the mechanic to do whatever they need to. Having this done will give you peace of mind and ensure that the car is working safely and the way it should.

Draft an Emergency Plan

Talk to your college student about good roadside emergency habits. Make sure they have the phone number for a tow truck or roadside assistance stored in their phone. Create an emergency car kit that includes jumper cables, a flashlight, extra batteries, and road flares. You should also include items like a first aid kit, a portable USB charger, and a gallon of bottled water. Let your child know how they should safely handle any breakdowns or flat tires so they’ll be safe on the road.

Practice Good Car Care Advice

Encourage your college student to learn more about car care and maintenance. Have them look through their car’s owner’s manual to give them a sense of what to look for if they ever need to troubleshoot a problem. Emphasize the importance of checking things like tire pressure and oil levels. Include a small car care guide that can fit in the glovebox. Make sure they understand the importance of practicing regularly scheduled maintenance on the vehicle. This will encourage them to start young and can help them avoid costly repairs in the future.
