The dreaded check engine light. Sometimes they come in with a ding sound. Sometimes their orangish yellow presence suddenly appears while driving. Either way, the check engine light is your vehicle’s way of telling you something negative might be happening inside your engine.
Village Autoworks of Roseville, Minnesota is happy to decipher what your check engine light means and offer you the routine maintenance to prevent it from happening. Our ASE Certified Technicians will tell you what you need and listen to your needs.
Here is what to do with a check engine light:
Why does my check engine light come on?
Your engine is trying to warn you about a potential problem. The good news is that most of the time, your check engine light comes on to warn you about preventive maintenance and nothing has likely happened yet. You should still treat the light with urgency as your vehicle’s computer system has detected an issue and get your vehicle into our shop right away.
What could the problem be?
Check engine lights come on for a huge variety of reasons. One common and very easy to fix issue is a gas cap problem. An improperly sealed gas cap can simply not be tight enough, as the gas tank is meant to be air sealed. Does simply tightening your gas cap turn your light off? Good!
Your vehicle could have issues with the variety of sensors that monitor air intake, the spark plugs that keep your engine started and running, or catalytic converter issues, amongst many others large and small. While many people dislike their check engine light, you may consider it’s glow a welcome sight that could prevent a full engine breakdown which will cost you more.
