When Do the Filters in My Car Need to Be Replaced?

Your car, truck, van, or utility vehicle has four primary filters that need to be replaced at different intervals. Village Autoworks can check your filters and let you know how much life they have left or replace them when necessary. Each of these filters has a different job, all of which is crucial to you and your automobile. Something as simple as a clogged filter can actually affect your engine’s performance and even prevent you from being able to start your vehicle. Let’s talk more about automotive filters and when they need to be replaced.

Cabin Filter

Spring ushers in warm weather and hay fever for many allergy sufferers. If you find that you’re getting stuffed up and miserable when you are driving your car, it could be that your cabin air filter needs to be replaced. Generally, this filter should be replaced every 30,000 miles, and it is responsible for ensuring the air that blows into your automobile’s cabin is filtered and free of pollens and other irritants.

Engine Filter

Every 12,000 miles. That’s when the air filter needs to be changed in the engine. It is so important to make sure that you stick to the schedule, or even replace the air filter earlier if it needs it. The air filter ensures the air in the engine is cleaned before it is routed through the intake manifold into the combustion chamber. A clogged air filter will affect your engine performance, gas mileage, and ability to start your car.

Fuel Filter

A clogged fuel filter can also affect your ability to start your car, as well as your engine’s performance. This filter is responsible for removing the contaminants and sediment that are found in all gasoline and diesel fuel, even if you buy the most expensive in town. The fuel filter should be changed every 30,000 miles or earlier if you are having engine performance issues that are attributed to a clogged filter.

Oil Filter

Finally, the oil filter is changed every 3,000 miles if you have conventional motor oil in your engine, and every 7,500 miles if you have synthetic oil. In other words, this filter is changed when you get an oil change. The oil filter keeps the oil clean as it flows through the engine and, as such, it helps to extend the life of your engine.
